Russian cybersecurity firm Kaspersky has warned cryptocurrency users about the increasing prevalence of fake hardware wallets in the market. The warning comes after the firm’s cyber incident expert, Stanislav Golovanov, reported an issue with fake hardware wallets purporting to be major wallet firm Trezor. The victim reportedly purchased a tampered hardware wallet that posed as Trezor’s advanced crypto wallet, Trezor Model T, through a “trusted seller through a popular classifieds website.” This allowed fraudsters to steal Bitcoin via a replaced microcontroller, which enabled attackers to take over control of the user’s private keys. Authenticated cryptocurrency devices must be purchased directly from the official vendor to avoid similar attacks. Kaspersky reminds users that such supply chain attacks are not new in the crypto community and advises caution while using cryptocurrency for transactions.
