Florida Governor Ron De Santis has announced his candidacy for the 2024 US Presidential race, positioning himself as the leading Republican candidate to challenge former President Donald Trump. Unlike Trump, De Santis has been a vocal advocate for pro-crypto policies and is staunchly opposed to Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs). In a recent Twitter Spaces conversation with Elon Musk, De Santis expressed his support for Bitcoin and vowed to protect citizens’ right to use it. He also criticized the Biden Administration’s attempts to regulate the crypto industry, warning that continued efforts to do so could lead to its demise. De Santis is not alone in his opposition to CBDCs, with Republican Congressmen Tom Emmer and Ted Cruz sharing his views. In March, De Santis introduced legislation to ban CBDCs from being used in Florida, arguing that they represent a transfer of power from individual consumers to a central authority, which is not good for a free society.
