Optimism, an Ethereum Layer 2 blockchain, recently completed its third successful airdrop. Known as ‘Airdrop #3,’ it distributed over $26 million worth of its OP tokens to a total of 31,870 unique addresses.
According to Optimism, the airdrop is part of its community incentivization and governance plan. The distribution involved a total of 19,411,313 OP tokens, which were allocated to eligible users who delegated their voting power between January 20th and July 20th, 2023. The goal of the airdrop was to reward positive-sum governance participation within the Optimism community. Users who delegated to an actively participating voter received a 2x bonus.
To ensure the security of its users, Optimism emphasized that there is no claims page for Airdrop #3. All distributions began automatically on September 18th, 2023, at 18:10 UTC. The platform warned users to ignore any sites claiming to disperse the airdrop and reminded them not to interact with any site asking them to claim the airdrop.
This successful completion of Airdrop #3 marks the continuation of Optimism’s token distribution efforts. The previous airdrop saw the distribution of 11.7 million OP tokens to users who delegated their token voting power and incurred more than $6.10 in Layer 2 gas expenses since March 25th, 2022. While the second airdrop distributed over 200 million tokens to users in May 2022. Optimism has stated that it plans to conduct additional airdrops in the future, with 19% of the total initial supply of OP tokens dedicated to these distributions.
Optimism’s commitment to conducting airdrops and encouraging active participation in its governance is part of its broader strategy to scale new coordination mechanisms within its platform.
