Tornado Cash, a decentralized anonymity tool powered by Ethereum, was recently hacked, leading to an integration of malicious code into the protocol. The attacker successfully stole voting power from other users, leaving the governance of Tornado Cash’s DAO in the wrong hands. However, there is hope on the horizon, as a proposal to remove the harmful code and restore the balance of governance back to token holders is currently up for a vote. Despite doubts regarding the timing, it is highly probable that the proposal will succeed, given the attacker’s holdings of TORN governance tokens. This is an important step towards securing the trust of crypto users in decentralized systems such as Tornado Cash, which provides a vital but vulnerable service for anonymous online transactions.
