Worldcoin Surpasses 4 Million App Downloads and Boasts 1 Million Active Users

Iris-scanning project Worldcoin has achieved a significant milestone with its mobile World App surpassing 4 million downloads, according to a blog post from the project’s team. If confirmed by Coingecko, this would place World App as the sixth most downloaded software wallet on Coingecko’s list. The project, known as “Tools for Humanity,” also reported a doubling of its monthly users to over 1 million in the past six months.

“World App now has more than 1 million monthly active users, 4 million downloads and 22 million transactions. Not bad for six months,” tweeted Tools for Humanity on November 1, 2023.

Worldcoin is a project that utilizes iris scanning to verify users’ humanness. Once their iris is scanned, users receive a “World ID” that can be used to prove their authenticity to applications and prevent bot activity. As a reward for verification, users receive 25 Worldcoin (WLD) tokens, currently valued at around $46.50.

The project has gained popularity in developing markets like Argentina, where some participants have registered and sold the coins for quick profits. However, Worldcoin has faced criticism for its alleged threat to privacy. Critics argue that the project is too centralized and can lead to the public exposure of users’ data.

To cash out their WLD tokens, Worldcoin users must download the World App to create an account. The team announced that the app has been downloaded over 4 million times. This would position it above the Solana Phantom wallet but below Bitcoin.com’s Bitcoin wallet on Coingecko’s list of popular wallets.

Many users who register continue to actively use the app after downloading it. The app has achieved 1 million monthly, 500,000 weekly, and 100,000 daily active users, doubling its monthly user count in the past six months.

Despite its successes, Worldcoin continues to face criticism from privacy advocates. In Kenya, a parliamentary committee ordered the project to cease operations due to privacy concerns. While Worldcoin complied with the order, it also issued a statement asserting its compliance with all privacy laws in the country.
